Write about what you like and make sure that your readers can’t find that info anywhere else. Then market your blog like crazy to attract a lot of visitors. Once you have a good amount of visitor coming to your site daily, you can start charging for advertising on your site.
Don’t forget to update daily to keep your readers coming back!
The first thing to do would be choose a topic. Not only do you need to choose a subject your enjoy and are knowledgeable about but also something that will interest other people. If you choose to blog on grooming poodles but hate dogs you won’t be able to commit to it. On the other hand if you choose to highlight what you eat for breakfast everyday you likely won’t find many interested readers. Also try to choose a niche, you don’t want something too broad that is completely saturated with other blogs/websites, as you won’t get as many readers.
After you choose a perfect niche you can set up a blog for free at a site like blogspot.com. Choose a design that is appealing, but not too busy. You want people to focus on your content, not your background. Also the viewers with slower browsers aren’t going to wait for your page to load.
Now to monetize your site there are basically three different ways, you can use one, two, or all three. The first is ads, like google adsense. You get paid an undetermined amount whenever someone clicks one of the ads. Another way is through affiliate links, which if I’m not mistaken amazon offers. If one of your viewers clicks on the ad and purchases one of their products you get a certain percentage of the sale. Finally you can get paid via links and/or reviews. The company e-mails you with a link, you put it in your blog and get paid. (For companies that do this check out http://www.athomeopps.com)
Now you have to be persistent. It is imperative that you update often and on a set schedule. Not that you should post every Monday at 8:30 sharp, but your readers should have a general idea of when to expect a new post. Say every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or something like that. Try your best not to miss any posts, especially in the crucial first few months.
Finally you need to find customers. Commit on forums using your domain name as your byline. Submit your blog to every search engine and blog directory possible. Learn a bit about search engine optimization and include keywords in your content. Take advantage of all free forums and classifieds and promote, promote, promote.
This may sound difficult but if you choose a subject you are passionate about and put a little effort into this it can be well worth it.
