Using Guest Bloggers
A successful blog that has a large following can often benefit from using guest bloggers. Adding a variety of articles from outside sources can give a blog more relevance in the eyes of readers, since it expresses a diversity of opinion, and bringing your blog to the attention of other bloggers by inviting them to post guest articles can sometimes result in them mentioning you, thereby giving you additional incoming links.
You may also find that you are invited to be a guest blogger yourself, in which case you can generally link back to your own blog when doing so.
Using a guest author may also be a good idea if yours is a popular blog and you will be unavailable to post new blog entries for an extended period of time. The lack of updates may cause the blog to lose traffic, so it may be prudent for you to make arrangements for a guest blogger or a series of guest bloggers to post new items during your absence.
Advertising for Guest Bloggers
There are a number of locations where a blog owner can advertise for guest bloggers. Job boards specifically for bloggers or freelance writers are an excellent option for finding guest bloggers, although it will cost you to do so.
Job boards for bloggers are frequently visited by experienced bloggers who are looking for new opportunities to blog for compensation. These bloggers may have specific experience with the subject matter of the blog or may simply be adept at creating interesting blogs on a variety of subjects.
Job boards for freelance writers are another great option. These writers may not necessarily have experience blogging but they may have other writing experience that is useful. Blog owners should consider posting a detailed messaged specifying the type of work required and duration of the project and asking for clips from the writers which can be used to verify the writer’s skill level.
Blog owners may also wish to advertise for guest bloggers on message boards related to the subject of the blog. Visitors of this blog may not necessarily have writing experience but will likely be quite knowledgeable about the subject of the blog and therefore be capable of producing interesting and insightful blogs.
You can also join a Blogging Community such as MyBlogGuest which is specifically designed to facilitate article swapping and guest blogging.
Selecting Guest Bloggers
Selecting a guest blogger should be done carefully to ensure the guest blogger is reliable and capable of producing articulate, informative and interesting blog posts. If you advertise on a job board such as Elance or Rent-a-Coder, ask for examples of a writer’s product before agreeing to pay for articles.
Using a guest author from a blogging community is a bit simpler, as you can see the writer’s product first hand when you visit their blog, and the only “payment” involved may be a link back to their blog, or provision of one of your own articles for them to use on their blog, in exchange for you publishing their article on your blog.
Compensating Guest Bloggers
When using services such as Elance, you will be entering into a contract, usually with someone who has bid on your project through the auction system such sites use. If you find a guest author yourself through MyBlogGuest or simply by contacting the author of a blog you have visited and like, “compensation” usually amounts to an article swap between the two authors, and/or a “resource box” posted with the article and linking back to the guest author’s own blog. In either case, be sure that you both understand the terms *before* posting the author’s articles, to prevent disputes or claims of copyright infringment.
