What Is a Blog?
What is a blog, anyway? Is a single sales page a blog?
Apparently, some people who have gotten wind of the blogging phenomena don’t understand the definition of a blog. It’s an online journal (the thoughts of one person), or a forum to which others can comment on the entries of the primary blogger, the blog owner.
This isn’t my blog definition, but inherently what a blog is. All you have to do is take a look at a few blogs to understand the definition of a blog, and what a blog is.
Lately, however, some people have decided that they can write one or two blog entries that are nothing more than a blatant sales pitch for their mlm, product or business, post it on a blogging site, and call it a ”blog”. Either they don’t understand the definition of a blog, or they are simply to lazy to create and maintain a “real” blog.
As the former webmaster of an Internet Marketing Blog Directory, I saw quite a few of these in the submissions to my directory. I rejected them.
Get real, folks! A blog is supposed to contain ongoing entries, and real, informational content. I’m not interested in visiting your blog only to find you want to sell me a satellite dish or a cell phone!
Originally, blogs were mostly personal journals of one sort or another. Later, they evolved in such a way that some blogs came to have social and political significance. More recently, they have been adopted by the smartest of internet marketers, and small and large businesses.
I am most definitely an advocate of using blogs and RSS as marketing tools. After all, I wrote an ebook on the subject. But simply posting a sales page and calling it a “blog” is ridiculous. A real blog, even one used for marketing, is more like an ongoing journal or diary. It’s a sequence of informative posts that tell a story of some sort, or convey meaningful information.
To me, a single sales page passed off as a “blog” for the sake of some directory listings is little more than search engine spam. Most real bloggers would agree that it’s a perversion of the definition of a blog.
These fools don’t even realize that if they don’t update their blog, and provide some real content, they’ll lose any search engine exposure that they gained in the first place …
What is a blog to an internet marketer? A powerful tool that can be used to gain customer appreciation and loyalty, and traffic to another website. It can be used to gain search engine exposure for other websites.
Most importantly, a blog is a vehicle for disseminating valuable information!
Happy Blogging!
